Erica Smit
In 2001 Erica(1962) started an education of sculpture and design at Crejat, the new acadamy in Alkmaar.
During the 3 years of this education she learned several techniques, and also to understand art history, materials and design
Nowadays she is searching for her own direction.
She still works with various materials, wood, clay, metal, it is a challenge and stimulates the fantasy..
Erica likes to work with ceramics and makes big torsos, which she builts up.
She varies with different kinds of clay, oxydes and engobes.
The torsos,decorated with tattoo's or muscles, give directly an impression of the person behind the body, and that is interesting
She is trying new materials and she likes metals.
At the torso, she first was exploring the skin, then what lies under the skin and after that what lies upon the skin.
The metal corsets are wearable and tailor-made.
Her newest series are the ones for hanging on the wall. Especially the lines on a muscular male torso are an inspiration, and the tattoo's become a trade mark for her.
